Guideposts for the Era of Smart Decarceration

The Smart Decarceration Initiative (SDI), a joint initiative of Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Chicago and the Institute for Justice Research and Development (IJRD) at Florida State University, has released an updated tool with guideposts and actionable strategies to achieve smart decarceration authored by both of our Promote Smart Decarceration network co-leads. Use this guide to implement multidisciplinary criminal justice reform policy & practice interventions.

“Smart decarceration will only be achieved when three simultaneous goals are accomplished:
1. Substantially reduce the incarcerated population in jails and prisons
2. Redress race, economic, and behavioral health disparities of those
involved in the criminal justice system
3. Maximize public well-being and public safety”
