Multiple issues exist that reduce the participation of people in community as they age (e.g., attitudes/ageism, lack of suitable transportation, an inhospitable built environment, lack of universal access to user friendly technologies, inefficient outreach within communities, lack of supports for AIDLs, and limited imagination for matching ability to meaningful interaction or flexible activity). Though some solutions are known, such as universal design, there is still much to be done to assist the ever increasingly diverse older adult population in staying connected to their chosen activity and community.
