I see affordable housing as a public health problem. It is difficult to provide effective interventions to assist people with other problems if their basic needs are not met, and over and over again the primary basic need that any are seeking when they come to see me is housing. Unfortunately there are too little resources for affordable housing for those with low incomes. I have seen some promising programs here in Georgia over the past few years. One in particular is Atlanta’s Mayor Kasim Reed’s Unsheltered No More Program. He has researched what other cities are doing as well and building on other successes from around the country. We need more national collaboration such as this and more funding.
